Overview
Here's a great trick that you can add in to any song you're writing or learning in the key of E (B too, but I mainly focus here on the key of E). The basic idea is to keep the 1st and 2nd string ring throughout every chord. The chords in the key of E are:

E – F#m – G#m – A – B – C#m – D#dim – E

I try these new chord shapes with a I – V – vi – IV (1 5 6 4)

E – B – C#m – A

and a I – vi – ii – V (1 6 2 5)

E – C#m – F#m – B

The rhythm I use is:

d d u u d u
1 2 + (3) + 4 +
