This is a brief overview of finger picking and are applying general guidelines. The chord progression used throughout is C – C – Dm – G. We’re going to be putting a finger to a string. Our the thumb goes on the root note and fingers follow. For example:

5th String Root (C, A, Am etc.)

T – 5th String | 1st Finger – 4th String | 2nd Finger – 3rd String | 3rd

6th String Root (E, Em, G etc.)

T – 6th String | 1st Finger – 4th String | 2nd Finger – 3rd String | 3rd Finger – 2nd String | 4th Finger – 1st String | *Skip 5th String

4th String Root (D, Dm etc.)

T – 4th String | 1st Finger – 3rd String | 2nd Finger – 2nd String | 3rd Finger – 1st String

T – Thumb

1 – 1st finger

2 – 2nd finger

3 – 3rd finger

4 – 4th finger

T.# – snap your thumb and finger # together

Roll – quick succession of finger picking T-1-2-3

Claw – pluck all stings together T.1.2.3
