Modes is greek for “moods”. There are specific instances where the chord progression determines the mood of the song, but sometimes not! Here’s a way to flow in between moods using three major modes: Ionian (Major), Mixolydian and Lydian.
I go through 3 licks and move each one to a different mood… that makes 9 licks total!
The Ionian (Major) mode
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7
The Mixolydian mode
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – b7
The Lydian mode
1 – 2 – 3 – #4 – 5 – 6 – 7
