Modes is greek for “moods”. There are specific instances where the chord progression determines the mood of the song, but sometimes not! Here’s a way to flow in between moods using three minor modes: Aeolian (Natural Minor), Phrygian and Dorian.
I go through 3 licks and move each one to a different mood… that makes 9 licks total!
The Aeolian (Natural Minor) mode
1 – 2 – b3 – 4 – 5 – b6 – b7
The Phrygian mode
1 – b2 – b3 – 4 – 5 – b6 – b7
The Dorian mode
1 – 2 – b3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – b7
